The best time to visit the Colosseum is first thing, right when it opens at 08:30, or in the last two hours before closing. At those times there are fewer people, better light and less heat. The worst moment is midday, when all the groups arrive together. Here are the details by season and the days worth avoiding.
If you only take one tip away, make it this: go in at 08:30, as soon as it opens. The first hour is the quietest of the day, before the tour groups and the day trips from outside Rome arrive. In spring and summer it also lets you avoid the hottest hours, which inside the amphitheatre — with barely any shade — really make themselves felt. The morning light is also ideal for photographing the tiers.
If you're not an early riser, the other great window is the two hours before closing. Remember that last admission is one hour before the site shuts, so plan accordingly. Late in the afternoon the crowds thin out, the sun is gentler and the Colosseum's stone turns a beautiful golden tone. It's many photographers' favourite option.
Between 11:00 and 15:00 the day's biggest crowds gather: guided groups, day trips and the bulk of independent tourism all coincide. In summer it's also when the heat peaks and there's little shade. If you can only go at those hours, a guided tour or the Arena tour with skip-the-line access will spare you the worst of the wait.
