Getting to the Colosseum is very easy: the most convenient option is metro Line B, stop Colosseo, whose exit is right opposite the monument. The number 3 tram also stops there, several buses run along Via dei Fori Imperiali and, from the centre, it's about a 15-minute walk from Piazza Venezia. The address is Piazza del Colosseo 1.
Line B (blue) has a stop called Colosseo whose exit is practically at the foot of the amphitheatre: you climb the steps and there it is. It's the most direct way to get there from most parts of Rome. From Termini station (the main rail hub) it's just a few stops on Line B. If you're coming from areas covered by Line A, change at Termini.
To validate your public-transport ticket, remember that in Rome the same ticket works for metro, tram and bus within its validity period.
If you're staying in the historic centre, walking is an experience in itself. From Piazza Venezia you reach the Colosseum in about 15 minutes along Via dei Fori Imperiali, with the imperial forums on both sides and the Colosseum appearing at the end. It's also very close to the Trevi Fountain (about 15–20 minutes) and the Roman Forum, which is in fact right next to the monument.
